Commuting in Northern Virginia

Do I Want To Ride or Drive?

Your bicycle can be your transportation.  If you have a passion to ride your bike then you can become familiar with riding your bike to work.  It's great exercise and saves money.  I met a person that commuted 32 miles on their bike using various trails.  Anything is possible.

You can participate in slugging as a transportation option.  Slugging is a term used to describe a unique form of commuting found in Washington, DC area sometimes referred to as "Instant Carpooling" or "Casual Carpooling".  It's unique because people commuting into the city make pit stop for passengers needing a ride.  Although it sounds different, Slugging has its own set of rules, proper etiquette, and specific pickup and drop off location.  So don't touch the driver's radio if you don't like the music!  You can find additional information at

Riding the bus is an option.  Using the Metropolitan Area Transit Authority can get you to various locations at an inexpensive price.  You can find additional information at

Van pooling with others can save money also.  Wherever you reside you may find others traveling to the same location that has the plan already in place.  Ride sharing saves you time, money, and commuter stress.  Van pooling commuters pays a fraction compared to those driving.  Additional information can be found at

Word of Advice

Traffic in Northern Virginia is very unpredictable.  Leaving work only 15 minutes early could save you 30 minutes from waiting in traffic.  I recommend not traveling with less than a 1/4  tank of gas.  You'll see many vehicles off to the side because they ran out of gas.

Do you have the proper gear  to commute?  Would you be ready to wait for a bus while it's pouring rain outside?
